Project Title: SSG-Bridge: Enhancing Urban Resilience and Sustainability through UK-India Collaboration
Location: India, Ludhiana (In-person) and remotely with the UK leads, with possible travel and engagement activities
Duration: Fixed-term contract (12 months) - 1 August 2025 until 31 July 2026
Remuneration: £6500 / annum (as per project budget allocation)

SSG-Bridge is a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing urban resilience and sustainability through knowledge exchange and research collaboration between the UK and India. The project focuses on integrating digital technologies, smart urban solutions, and green infrastructure strategies to address urban challenges. A key component of this project is conducting a feasibility study to assess the potential for implementing sustainable urban strategies in Ludhiana (India) in compare with Birmingham (UK).
The Project Associate (PA) will be recruited from India and will be primarily responsible for conducting the feasibility study for the project. We are seeking a proactive and organised PA to support the coordination, communication, and delivery of key project activities including stakeholder engagement, Early Career Researcher (ECR) support, and symposium planning. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about sustainability, urban development, or international collaboration who enjoys working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment. The role requires strong analytical skills, an understanding of sustainable urban development, and experience in interdisciplinary research.
- Conduct a feasibility study assessing the integration of smart, sustainable, and green (SSG) concepts in Ludhiana and Birmingham.
- Collect, analyse, and interpret data related to urban resilience, green infrastructure, and digital technologies.
- Review policies, case studies, and existing frameworks on smart and sustainable urban development in India.
- Engage with stakeholders, including policymakers, urban planners, and community representatives, to gather insights.
- Assist in developing reports, policy briefs, and recommendations based on research findings.
- Support collaborative knowledge exchange activities between UK and Indian researchers.
- Contribute to dissemination efforts, including workshops, presentations, and publications.
- Assist in other project-related tasks such as logistical and communication aspects, stakeholder and ECR coordination , as well as flexible project support as needed under the guidance of the project leads.
- A minimum of a Master’s degree (PhD degree is preferred) in Urban Planning, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Digital Transformation, Civil Engineering, Smart Cities, or a related field.
- Experience in conducting feasibility studies, urban research, or policy analysis.
- Strong understanding of sustainable urban development, green infrastructure, and digital urban technologies.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote research environment.
- Experience engaging with stakeholders and conducting fieldwork (preferred but not essential).
- Knowledge of urban governance frameworks and policies in India and the UK.
- Experience in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research.
- Familiarity with data visualisation tools, or urban simulation software.
- Prior experience in UK-India research collaborations (preferred but not required).

Early Career Researchers
SSG-Bridge UK-India Initiative
The SSG-Bridge Project is pleased to invite applications from Early Career Researchers (ECRs) for participation in the upcoming Conference on SSG-Bridge: Enhancing Urban Resilience and Sustainability, scheduled to be held in mid-September 2025 (16, 17 & 18 September) at MBCIE, Ludhiana, Punjab, along with a Symposium at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab, India.
This initiative brings together researchers from the United Kingdom and India to advance innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to Smart, Sustainable, and Green (SSG) cities, with a strong focus on:

🔹 Technological integration in urban infrastructure
🔹 Environmental sustainability and resource efficiency
🔹 Inclusive governance and citizen participation
These events aim to create a vibrant platform for knowledge-sharing, networking, and shaping future research in the area of sustainable urban development.

- (Optional) Willingness to join interdisciplinary UK-India research groups through a short proposal submission
- Those applying to participate in collaborative research groups must submit a short research proposal. We will contact you directly requesting to submit your proposal before the deadline.
- Must be willing to work in interdisciplinary teams of UK and Indian ECRs, attend writing workshops, and collaborate on research outputs.
This is a unique opportunity to engage in high-impact research collaborations that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster long-term academic partnerships between the UK and India.
- One of the best ECRs ( evaluated and selected by Project Team) would have chance to travel to UK to attend a similar symposium (fully funded).
